Recently, Goertek's project focusing on the production of micro-nano optical components for AR glasses, utilizing 12-inch transparent substrate wafers, has officially commenced production in Lingang, Shanghai. This facility stands out as one of the select few optical fabrication plants (fabs) worldwide capable of mass-producing 12-inch transparent wafers. This achievement signifies a pivotal advancement into large-scale production, leveraging large-size wafers for the manufacturing of high-end optical components like AR diffractive waveguides.

The project, developed and managed by Goertek Optics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., entails a total investment of approximately 3.28 billion yuan and spans a construction area of 261,000 square meters. It is recognized as a key initiative within the "Oriental Chip Port" industrial cluster in Lingang, Shanghai. By adopting a 12-inch transparent substrate wafer process, the project offers substantial benefits in terms of wafer size, surpassing the industry's conventional 4-inch and 6-inch wafer solutions.

The project's journey from inception to production has been swift. A contract was signed in February 2023, the production building reached its structural completion on September 1, 2024, equipment installation commenced by July 2025, and now, the production line is fully operational.

The production line is outfitted with Class 100 and Class 1000 clean rooms and integrates semiconductor-grade precision machinery, including ASML lithography systems. Its primary focus lies in the mass production of high-end optical components, such as AR waveguide sheets, electrochromic lenses, and microlens arrays. The technologies employed span crucial domains, including diffractive waveguide design and silicon carbide precision machining.
