Doubao Mobile Assistant Officially Launched

On September 14, the consumer edition of Doubao Mobile Assistant was officially rolled out.

After a long wait, this innovative tool has finally transitioned from last year's technical preview phase to become accessible to everyday users.

Towards the end of last year, when ByteDance and ZTE joined forces to introduce the Nubia M153, Xiaolei provided an in-depth review of this groundbreaking product. At that time, it stood out as the sole Agent assistant on the market capable of executing tasks directly on users' phones through simple voice commands. Whether it was finding products, comparing prices, ordering food delivery, or booking flights, all it took was a single sentence. The assistant could recognize on-screen content and then launch the appropriate apps to carry out operations sequentially.

How enthusiastic was the initial response?

According to reports from domestic media, the Nubia M153, priced at 3499 yuan, quickly sold out, with prices on Xianyu (a second-hand trading platform) soaring to as high as 4999 yuan at one point. Despite being just a limited-release engineering prototype, it sparked more discussion than many official flagship devices.

Unfortunately, issues soon surfaced. Some users reported experiencing abnormal exits or even being unable to log in when using Doubao Mobile Assistant to operate WeChat or Taobao. The manufacturer responded that this might have triggered security risk control measures. Subsequently, Doubao disabled the ability to operate certain apps and restricted applications in financial, incentive-based, and some gaming scenarios.

Whether due to concerns over account risks or fears of losing access points, Doubao, which had early on brought GUI Agent technology to smartphones, essentially encountered a barrier that the entire industry was destined to face sooner or later.

With today's release of the consumer version, ByteDance has clearly invested significant time and effort into resolving these past issues.

The mobile operation functionality has been preserved, while Doubao has introduced the SAEP (Screen Automation Execution Protocol) declaration protocol. Third-party apps can now specify which operations AI is permitted to perform and which are explicitly prohibited. Officials stated that if developers refuse certain operations, Doubao Mobile Assistant will halt automatic execution.

Privacy and security have also been bolstered, with officials emphasizing that data processing adheres to principles of reasonableness, necessity, and user autonomy, incorporating a layered and graded Agent protection system.

Moreover, there are now significantly more features compared to last year. Doubao now supports multiple wake-up methods, including voice and AI key activation, and can complete tasks by combining visual input from the camera. In official demonstrations, users can scan their home decor with their phone, and Doubao can interpret the user's context and actual needs, searching e-commerce platforms for cabinets that meet specific size and price requirements.

You can even ask it to locate the expiration date of your Hong Kong and Macau pass amidst a sea of text messages or inquire about specific details from yesterday's Feishu meeting, acting as a true digital butler.

Beyond the product itself, as a tech editor, I find the industry trend particularly intriguing.

Interestingly, this year's flagship smartphones released by major manufacturers have all, without exception, pursued system-level Agent capabilities, enhancing screen understanding, cross-app execution, and personal information retrieval. This precisely validates that ByteDance's direction, explored under pressure, was indeed correct—Doubao had a long-term vision.

Backed by ByteDance's powerful multimodal large model foundation, Doubao's understanding and execution experience in real-world scenarios will not be outmatched by any hardware manufacturer.
