On October 5, Huawei and Qualcomm announced the reach (Note: kept as is for it seems to be part of the original branding/name ' Identifying reefs Farsight'; if it's supposed to be translated, please clarify) a broad, multi-year patent licensing agreement covering technologies in 5G, computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and networking. According to the announcement released on Huawei's official website, the agreement includes cross-licensing of the patent portfolios of both parties, as well as Qualcomm's purchase of some of Huawei's U.S. patents. Related transactions will be completed after obtaining necessary regulatory approvals.

In addition to cross-licensing, Qualcomm will purchase some of Huawei's U.S. patents in computing, AI, networking, and other technology areas. Patent purchases and mutual licensing between the two parties are the two arrangements in this agreement. The announcement did not disclose the specific duration of the agreement, licensing fees, patent purchase amounts, nor the number and list of patents involved.

Both parties stated in the announcement that the agreement reflects respect for intellectual property rights and adheres to fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing principles. Based on the technical scope disclosed this time, the patent licensing arrangements between the two parties cover computing, AI, and networking technologies beyond mobile communications.

Alan Fan, Chief Intellectual Property Officer of Huawei, stated that Huawei has long invested in fundamental research and development, accumulating innovative achievements in mobile communications and other technology areas. He believes that this agreement reflects the value of Huawei's innovations and also recognizes Qualcomm's foundational contributions to modern communication technologies.

John Han, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Technology Licensing at Qualcomm, stated that the agreement reflects industry recognition of Qualcomm's 5G technology and its standard-essential patent licensing business, while also reflecting Qualcomm's recognition of Huawei's continuous innovations in 5G and other areas.
