While many are still debating the need to find charging stations every few hundred kilometers for pure electric vehicles, BYD’s Tengshi has once again significantly raised the bar for mass-produced pure electric sedans.
The Tengshi Z9S, a mid-to-large pure electric sedan with multiple “world’s first” labels, officially opened for pre-sale on August 3.

With a pre-sale price range of 319,800 to 389,800 yuan, a maximum CLTC pure electric range of 1,100km, and 9-minute flash charging technology, the Z9S has shaken up the 300,000-400,000 yuan luxury pure electric sedan market since its pre-sale began.
I. Pre-sale Information and Launch Timeline
On August 3 at 19:30, the Tengshi Z9S officially opened for pre-sale, offering three configuration versions covering home and long-distance use, luxury executive, and extreme performance users. The pre-sale prices are as follows:
Flash Charging Luxury Version: 319,800 yuan, CLTC pure electric range of 920km, single-motor rear-wheel drive, positioned as an entry-level luxury version;
Flash Charging Flagship Version: 349,800 yuan, CLTC pure electric range of 1,100km, the main range version;
Yi Sanfang Flash Charging Performance Version: 389,800 yuan, three-motor four-wheel drive, focusing on extreme performance output.

According to the official schedule, the pre-sale is just a warm-up. The actual pricing, complete configuration details, and delivery timeline will be officially announced at the launch event on September 23 at BYD’s global headquarters in Shenzhen. Many netizens are waiting to see if the pre-sale prices will be adjusted at the launch event and whether additional benefits will be offered, as these factors will directly determine the vehicle’s subsequent market performance.

With a length of 5,090mm and a wheelbase of 3,025mm, the Z9S is a standard mid-to-large sedan. It comes standard with Yunlian A dual-chamber air suspension, the Divine Eye 5.0 intelligent driving system, and rear-wheel steering, setting a high bar for hardware specifications beyond just range.

II. 1,100km Range + 9-Minute Flash Charging: Rewriting the Refueling Logic
The Z9S’s two most talked-about features are its 1,100km CLTC pure electric range and 9-minute flash charging, which BYD claims sets a new world record for mass-produced pure electric sedans.
What does 1,100km mean?
For urban commuting and daily use, many drivers won’t need to visit a charging station for half a month. For long-distance travel between cities, a full charge allows direct arrival without mid-route charging, significantly alleviating range anxiety for pure electric vehicles.

Paired with the second-generation Blade Battery’s flash charging solution, official data shows that charging from 10% to 97% takes just 9 minutes under normal temperatures, and only 3 minutes longer at -30°C. The goal is to make charging as quick and convenient as refueling.
Of course, online discussions have been sharp. Many netizens have raised practical concerns:
“1,100km is under CLTC ideal conditions. Actual range will be lower on highways, with AC on, or in winter cold—don’t expect to achieve this daily.”
“9-minute flash charging looks great, but it requires dedicated high-voltage charging stations. Ordinary public chargers won’t reach this speed.”
Objectively speaking, 1,100km is a lab-tested result, and real-world highway range will see some efficiency loss. The 9-minute flash charging speed also depends on charging station and battery temperature conditions. However, compared to current mass-produced pure electric sedans, this range-and-charging combination still places the Z9S in the top tier of the industry.

The mid-range Flash Charging Flagship Version, with a 1,100km range, costs 30,000 yuan more than the entry-level version, with the price difference mainly due to a larger battery. The top-spec 389,800 yuan Performance Version, however, reduces range to 780km in exchange for a triple-motor setup delivering 890kW (1,210 horsepower) and a 0-100km/h time of 2.68 seconds, clearly prioritizing performance.

III. High-End Hardware Specs, But Controversy Follows
Beyond range and fast charging, the Tengshi Z9S incorporates nearly all of BYD’s available technologies.
The top-spec Yi Sanfang Flash Charging Performance Version features a triple-motor four-wheel-drive system, achieving 0-100km/h in 2.68 seconds. Despite its length of over 5 meters, it achieves a turning radius of just 4.75 meters, thanks to rear-wheel steering, offering the agility of a smaller car. The Yunlian A air suspension and Road Preview 2.0 system balance sporty handling with executive-level ride comfort.

The Divine Eye 5.0 intelligent driving system comes standard with LiDAR, offering urban navigation and automatic parking across all trims. At the 300,000-yuan price point, these hardware specifications are highly competitive.
The interior continues Tengshi’s luxury approach, featuring Nappa leather, zero-gravity seats with ventilation, heating, and massage functions, catering to both family use and business reception . The dual storage spaces (front and rear trunks) enhance practicality.

However, controversy has surrounded the pre-sale since its launch.
Some netizens believe that starting at 319,800 yuan, with long range, flash charging, and a full suite of chassis and driving assistance technologies, the Z9S offers strong competitiveness for a domestic luxury sedan.

Others disagree: “The pre-sale price is high. Compared to the Z9GT, some features have been reduced. If the price doesn’t change at launch, it will struggle in the market.” Some users also criticize the differentiation of comfort features across trims, noting that an electric front trunk is not standard on all models priced over 300,000 yuan.
The presence of both support and skepticism highlights that the Tengshi Z9S is targeting the highly competitive 300,000-400,000 yuan pure electric sedan market. With strong rivals in this segment, success will depend not just on specifications but also on final pricing, purchase incentives, and real-world delivery and performance.
In recent years, the new energy vehicle sector has been chasing higher ranges and faster charging.

The Tengshi Z9S pushes mass-produced pure electric sedan CLTC range to 1,100km, combined with flash charging, Yunlian, and Yi Sanfang technologies, representing BYD’s current pinnacle in pure electric sedans.
However, “world’s first” claims on paper must ultimately hold up in real-world usage. The September 23 Shenzhen event will reveal the official pricing and delivery plans, determining whether the Z9S is just a visually impressive showpiece or a volume model that can win over large numbers of real users.
