Last year, Apple made a strategic shift by replacing the Plus model with the Air model, introducing the iPhone Air. This device stood apart from the 17 series, establishing itself as a distinct series and underscoring Apple's commitment to this new direction.
True to its name, "Air" signifies lightness, and with a mere 5.5mm thickness, the iPhone Air became Apple's slimmest phone to date.
Before its release, this phone garnered considerable attention, prompting numerous domestic manufacturers to follow suit. Many launched their own Air models, some even adopting the exact same name.
However, despite the initial buzz, the iPhone Air's launch was met with critical acclaim but lackluster sales, failing to meet market expectations.
In response, Apple slashed the price by 2000 yuan, reducing it from 7999 yuan to 5999 yuan. With additional national subsidies, the phone could be purchased for as low as 5499 yuan.
What led to this outcome? The drawbacks were simply too glaring.
Firstly, its lightweight design necessitated a smaller battery, resulting in subpar battery life. Secondly, its exclusive support for eSIM cards proved inconvenient for domestic users. Thirdly, the single-camera setup delivered mediocre photography performance. Lastly, the single speaker offered lackluster sound quality.
Of course, the iPhone Air had its merits: it was lightweight, boasted a large screen, ample memory, and a CPU on par with the Pro model. Nevertheless, the drawbacks overshadowed these advantages, leading to poor sales.
Many believe that if Apple addressed these shortcomings, the Air model, free from its flaws, could indeed become a "legendary device."
Recently, media reports have surfaced about the iPhone Air 2, suggesting that this new iteration has rectified the first generation's flaws and is poised to be a blockbuster, truly earning its legendary status.
Firstly, in terms of battery life, Apple is rumored to be utilizing a higher energy-density battery to boost capacity and enhance endurance.
Regarding eSIM support, while it remains more relevant to domestic carriers and solutions are limited, carrier backing could undoubtedly make it more user-friendly.
As for the camera, the iPhone Air 2 is said to feature a dual rear camera setup, significantly improving its imaging capabilities to align with the standard model and cater to the majority of users' needs.
The speaker situation remains unclear; it's speculated that the device might come with two speakers or stick with one.
However, the memory will remain at 12GB, and the phone will be even thinner, measuring just 5.2mm. The CPU will be the A20 Pro, preserving the device's key strengths.
In essence, nearly all the shortcomings of the first generation are expected to be addressed, while the advantages will be retained. This phone is anticipated to hit the market next spring, and its success will hinge on the price. If it's priced at 7999 or 8999 yuan, sales might be mediocre.
But if it's priced competitively at 5999 or 6999 yuan, like its predecessor, it could still be a compelling buy. What's your take on this?
