After Qualcomm initiated a patent infringement lawsuit against TECNO, could Huawei follow suit and bring TECNO to court?
According to the Unified Patent Court (UPC) in Europe, the Munich branch of the UPC added a new patent lawsuit on June 20, bearing the case number ACT_28975/2025. The presiding judges in this case are Zigann, Johansson, and Pichlmaier.
The specifics of Huawei's action against TECNO revolve around a patent, EP2725797, related to image encoding/decoding. However, the exact court date remains undisclosed.

Amidst this legal battle with a competitor, TECNO also faces another patent challenge from Sun Patent Trust, an American patent trust, which initiated a lawsuit on June 17.
This time, the patent dispute between the two entities centers on a video codec technology patent (EP2903267), and the initial hearing will take place at the Mannheim Regional Court.
TECNO can draw inspiration from Xiaomi's handling of similar patent battles, particularly in the realm of video codecs.
In early 2022, when confronted with a patent dispute over "HEVC/H.265 video codec" initiated by GE Video Compression, Xiaomi responded by filing an invalidity request with the National Intellectual Property Administration in China. This strategy successfully invalidated GE's patent.
Despite GE's subsequent appeals to the Beijing Intellectual Property Court and the Supreme People's Court, after over three years of legal proceedings, the final judgment upheld the invalidity of GE's patent.
Given Xiaomi's successful precedent, TECNO's overseas litigation concerning similar patent issues should also be manageable and resolvable.
