If we had to pinpoint the standout feature of smartphones in 2025, it would undoubtedly be battery life. Last year, the notion of an 8000mAh battery was unthinkable, yet this year, 7000mAh has become a benchmark. Any device falling significantly below this mark risks a substantial drop in user satisfaction. However, 7000mAh is currently the norm for mid-range, cost-effective models. Top-tier flagship phones, with their need to pack in more components, simply cannot accommodate such a large battery without increasing their thickness. Leading manufacturers like Samsung and Apple have taken a different tack: unable to add bulk, they've opted for extreme thinness.
Rumors have been swirling online since late last year that Apple will introduce the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air in 2025. However, Samsung has beaten them to the punch. An invitation to the launch event has already leaked online, revealing that Samsung will officially unveil the S25 Edge on May 13. Originally scheduled for April, the event was reportedly delayed by nearly a month due to mass production issues.
In terms of core configuration, the S25 Edge aligns with the existing S25 series, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Supreme Custom Edition chip. Personally, I believe that this custom edition, apart from a slightly higher main core frequency, is largely identical to the Snapdragon 8 Supreme Edition used by most other manufacturers. The S25 Edge's most notable feature is its astonishing 5.8mm thickness. If you have no frame of reference, imagine reducing the thickness of your current phone by roughly 30% – it's truly ultra-thin and light.
However, thinner bodies are more prone to bending. To ensure durability, the S25 Edge will employ not only a ceramic backplate but also an armored aluminum frame. How this differs from the armored aluminum frame of the current S25 series will be revealed at the launch event. Imaging capabilities are equally impressive, featuring the same 200-megapixel main camera as the S24 Ultra, coupled with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, ensuring top-notch photography performance.
The price of ultra-thinness is indeed steep. Rumors suggest that the S25 Edge has a battery capacity of only 3900mAh, unthinkable in today's era where anything below 4000mAh is a rarity. Moreover, the charging power is limited to 25W. Additionally, rumors indicate that Samsung will equip the S25 Edge with a 2K screen. Without employing innovative technologies to enhance battery life, the consequences are predictable: for heavy users, expect to charge the phone twice daily.
Therefore, potential buyers should be prepared. Carrying a portable charger and charging equipment at all times will likely become the norm. A protective case is an absolute must. While the design is undeniably stunning, whether the trade-offs are acceptable requires careful consideration.
It is rumored that the S25 Edge will be priced second only to the Ultra version of the same series, suggesting that the iPhone 17 Air may face a similar predicament. Whether or not to embrace such devices ultimately depends on one's budget and priorities.
