Can BYD Dolphin 06 persuade more "fuel car enthusiasts" to make the switch to new energy vehicles?

On August 13, BYD hosted a regional launch event for Dolphin 06 in Guangzhou, with Leitech/Dianchetong in attendance. The official price of the new model remains as previously announced, offering two power options: DM-i and EV, each with three configurations. The price range spans from RMB 139,800 to RMB 163,800.

The price bracket below RMB 200,000 is the most sought-after in the domestic auto market, and BYD has firmly established itself as a sales leader in this segment. Official figures reveal that BYD sold 344,296 vehicles in July, reinforcing its global dominance in new energy vehicle sales.

According to Dianchetong, BYD's popularity stems from its extensive product line in this price range. Sales data indicates that the Dynasty family and Ocean Network sold 315,136 units in July, accounting for 91.53% of total sales. Like the Song family, the Dolphin series targets the household SUV market. With the launch of Dolphin 06, following Dolphin 05 and Dolphin 07, the Dolphin lineup has been further expanded.

When selecting an SUV, family users prioritize spaciousness, affordability, and cost-effectiveness. Let's explore these aspects in detail.

In terms of space, Dolphin 06 measures 4800mm in length, 1920mm in width, and 1675mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2820mm. Its width and wheelbase are identical to Dolphin 07. Dolphin 06 boasts a passenger cabin ratio of 61%, higher than the typical 60% of German, American, and Japanese SUVs in the same class. Rear seating space is generous, and the trunk offers a base volume of 757L, capable of holding six 20-inch suitcases.

Dolphin 06 offers two powertrains. The DM-i version, renowned for its fuel-saving capabilities, offers a minimum electricity-depleted fuel consumption of 3.5L/100km and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.5 seconds. The EV version comes with battery pack capacities of 65.28kWh and 78.72kWh, providing CLTC pure electric ranges of 520km and 605km, respectively. For daily commuters traveling 30km, charging once every two weeks is practical.

In terms of cost-effectiveness, Dolphin 06 includes features such as a wireless phone charging pad and a cool/warm box. Heated and ventilated front seats are standard across the lineup, with the ventilation function using a more costly but effective suction method, a boon for users in Guangzhou.

Moreover, Dolphin 06 is equipped with BYD's "Tian Shen Zhi Yan C" advanced driver assistance system, Cloud Suspension-C, Sentry Mode, and other cutting-edge technologies.

BYD's Ocean Network has garnered the trust of over 5.2 million consumers, becoming a significant sales driver for the brand. While BYD's position in the domestic household vehicle market may seem unassailable, can the newly launched Dolphin 06 achieve similar success as the Song family?

Dianchetong believes it is highly plausible.

Although the Dolphin series may not have the same renown as the Song family, its core remains BYD. In the household SUV market around RMB 150,000, Dolphin 06 can compete with domestic hybrid SUVs like the Zero Run C series and Deep Blue S07, while also attracting potential buyers of joint venture fuel SUVs such as the Toyota Fenglanda and Volkswagen Tharu.

Particularly in Guangdong, where consumers trust Japanese brands for their fuel efficiency and durability, BYD still has room for growth. Dolphin 06's potential success may hinge on its performance during the upcoming "golden September and silver October" sales period.
