Facing Fierce Rivals: Tesla's European Sales Surge 271% in October, Yet It Trails Chinese Automakers in Many Countries

Fast Technology News, November 3: According to Phoenix News, Tesla's new vehicle registrations rose significantly across many European countries in October, though regional performance was uneven—and Chinese new energy vehicle makers continue to capture European market share.

Based on new car registration data released by statistical agencies in various countries, Tesla's rebound this round has been notably strong. The increase was most pronounced in Spain, up 271% year on year, followed by Portugal and Sweden at 186% and 248% respectively. Italy and Norway also posted near-doubled growth, while only Denmark saw relatively modest gains.

Industry observers attribute this sales recovery to a combination of external factors: a low base in the same period last year, higher fuel prices, continued implementation of local EV support policies, and steadily rising overall electrification demand in Europe.

Even with strong rebound momentum, Tesla's growth is unevenly distributed, with sharp disparities in market performance across countries.

Norway is a telling example. It is both a Tesla stronghold and fertile ground for the rapid rise of Chinese brands. Data shows Tesla achieved its best-ever October result locally, topping the best-selling brands for the month with a 9.8% market share.

Yet Chinese brands' momentum in Norway is even more striking. Their new car registrations in a single month reached 3,534 units—nearly double the same period last year—with overall market share climbing to a record 22.5%.

Breaking down by brand, Xpeng registered 932 vehicles that month, entering the top five among all brands. BYD followed closely, while Changan surged from just 15 units in the same period last year to 339 units, demonstrating considerable growth elasticity.

Unlike Norway, the competitive landscape in Denmark and Italy has already reversed. In Denmark, Tesla's market share that month was a mere 0.73%, far below Chinese brands such as BYD, Leapmotor, Xpeng, and SAIC MG.

Italy's data tells a similar story. Tesla's share was only 0.38%, while BYD, Leapmotor, and MG firmly occupied higher market positions, ranging from 1.21% to 4.55%.

Clearly, Tesla remains highly dependent on a product lineup built around its two main models, the Model 3 and Model Y. When facing Chinese rivals with richer product portfolios, its competitive shortcomings are gradually coming to the fore.

Tesla previously disclosed that by the end of the third quarter its passenger car order backlog had reached a four-year peak, with ample order reserves. But how to convert those orders into a stable advantage across a broad market remains a major challenge.
