The horizontally opposed engine, also known as the boxer engine or flat engine, is a piston internal combustion engine with a unique structure. Its core feature is that the cylinders are symmetrically distributed 180 degrees horizontally around the crankshaft, with pistons positioned on either side of the crankshaft. During operation, the pistons move in opposite horizontal reciprocating motions. Unlike traditional inline or V-type engine layouts, this engine type naturally possesses physical advantages of motion cancellation and a low center of gravity due to its symmetrical mechanical structure. With its groundbreaking design, it won the authoritative "China Heart" 2025 Top Ten Engines award, placing it among the only three enterprises globally possessing mass production technology for horizontally opposed engines.
From an industry development perspective, the mass production of domestic horizontally opposed engines marks a leap in China's automotive power technology from following to breakthrough. Against the backdrop of electrification transformation, domestic automakers have not stopped at iterating pure electric and conventional hybrid technologies but have delved deep into core high-end fuel power technologies, addressing a critical shortcoming in the local power industry chain.
