Audi: Balancing the Dawn and the Dusk

Recently, Audi's strategic north-south division has been formally established, delineating distinct roles for the Four-Ring brand and the AUDI brand.

According to Audi's official announcement, China FAW Group Corporation will take charge of developing the Audi Four-Ring brand, encompassing both traditional fuel-powered and new energy vehicles. Meanwhile, SAIC Audi will concentrate on the AUDI brand, a line exclusively crafted for the Chinese market, with a focus on the intelligent electric vehicle sector.

It's noteworthy that this brand realignment won't happen overnight; SAIC Audi will undergo a transitional phase. Per the official plan, SAIC Audi is permitted to continue selling existing Four-Ring models until the end of 2027, with after-sales services remaining unaffected.

The shift from a joint operation of the Four-Ring brand in both northern and southern regions to a focused approach on distinct brands marks a new chapter in Audi's China strategy.

This adjustment not only redefines the roles of Audi's northern and southern entities but also underscores Audi's strategy to "stride on two fronts" in China: one maintaining the traditional prowess of the Four-Ring brand, and the other venturing into the Chinese intelligent electric vehicle market with AUDI.

Behind this strategic move lie practical considerations.

The Four-Ring brand, with its long-standing presence in China, has amassed a solid brand reputation and a loyal user base. As highlighted by Liu Yigong, General Manager of China FAW Group Corporation, in the official statement, FAW Audi has been deeply entrenched in China for 38 years, amassing over ten million users. This legacy remains a formidable asset for the Four-Ring brand in the Chinese luxury car market.

More pragmatically, despite the burgeoning domestic new energy vehicle market, there's still a substantial demand for fuel vehicles. Models like the A6L, Q5L, and A3 continue to be the cornerstone of FAW Audi's sales. From January to September this year, these three fuel vehicle models collectively accounted for 69.74% of Audi's total sales in China. Simultaneously, FAW Audi is ramping up its electrification efforts, launching models like the Q6L e-tron and A6L e-tron based on the PPE luxury pure electric platform. Fuel vehicles are also undergoing intelligent upgrades, with models like the A5L incorporating Huawei's ADS (Advanced Driving System) technology.

It's clear that the Four-Ring brand has a strong foothold in the fuel vehicle market and is progressively enhancing its new energy vehicle portfolio. For Audi, preserving the existing strengths of the Four-Ring brand aligns with FAW Audi's current product strategy.

Entrusting AUDI with the mission to explore the Chinese intelligent pure electric market reflects another facet of Audi's strategy.

Unlike the Four-Ring brand, which boasts years of brand heritage, AUDI is a new brand co-created by Audi and SAIC, specifically tailored for the Chinese market. From its inception, it has targeted the intelligent pure electric sector, placing a premium on Chinese consumers' demand for intelligent cockpits, assisted driving, and other advanced features.

This positioning is evident in AUDI's product lineup. Following the debut of the Audi E5 Sportback, the first SUV model, the Audi E7X was also introduced in May this year. Both models are designed for the Chinese intelligent electric vehicle market. Additionally, the Audi Innovation Technology Center, exclusive to the AUDI brand, has been established in Shanghai, endowed with comprehensive local vehicle development capabilities, ensuring new models cater to domestic consumer needs from the research and development stage.

After all, competition in China's new energy vehicle market transcends brand comparison and power performance; intelligent experience, product update velocity, and understanding of local preferences are equally crucial. This explains Audi's decision to have AUDI chart a different course from the Four-Ring brand.

As Johannes Roscheck, President of Audi China, emphasized in the official statement, a clearer strategic focus and differentiated brand positioning will pave the way for Audi's sustained growth in China.

From this vantage point, the Four-Ring brand and AUDI each have their unique focus, preserving Audi's strengths in the traditional luxury car market while enabling AUDI to more precisely target the Chinese intelligent electric vehicle market, without confining its future to a singular path.

However, "striding on two fronts" is merely the first step. The real challenge for Audi's northern and southern entities lies in establishing a solid foothold in their respective markets.

For FAW Audi, despite the influence garnered by the Four-Ring brand over the years and the deployment of the PPE pure electric platform and intelligent technologies, whether its traditional luxury car market advantages can translate to the new energy sector remains to be seen in the marketplace.

SAIC Audi faces a different hurdle. As its focus shifts to the AUDI letter logo, gaining consumer recognition and acceptance of this new brand will be paramount. Especially in the current crowded landscape of intelligent electric vehicle brands, AUDI must not only offer competitive products but also distinguish itself with unique features.

In essence, Audi's north-south division isn't a choice between fuel and pure electric vehicles but rather a strategy to uphold traditional strengths while forging a new path in the Chinese intelligent electric vehicle market with AUDI.

Now that the development directions of Audi's two major brands have been clarified, whether "striding on two fronts" can be steady ultimately hinges on their ability to offer products that resonate with Chinese consumers.
